RAID

Last72 2017. 11. 16. 10:10

Acronym of Redundant Array of Independent Disks.

Enterprise user use this for sustainability and seamless run like server(RAID 1, 5, 6). End-user use this for speed (RAID 0). As i have 2 ssd in my laptop which is sata3 240gb and mvne m.2 256gb. I just to want it a big single volume and faster speed. But at the end, i couldn't get any of them.

First, i boot with windows pe using usb drive and easily make them striped (RAID 0). At this time, i didn't know that the disk has changed basic disk to dynamic disk. Here's first problem. To do Any kind of RAID or spanned drive, we need dynamic drive (dyn drive) but to install windows system, only basic drive can be installed. To to RAID and install windows, RAID in bios is required, not windows side. But my laptop bios doesn't seems to give me the RAID option between sata and mvne.

The speed - most important factor to me - is doubled in theory. But there is one condition for that. Two drive should be have same speed, other wise, its going to downgraded to slower device's speed. Back to my case, i gave up to install windows and tested speed of raided (striped) volume. And the result is about double of sata ssd's speed.

Because the description of laptop on vendor's website said it support RAID. So i'm guessing if i buy one more mvne ssd, i can apply raid on them.
