Application for Advanced Standing - Instructions

Eligibility

Advanced Standing is the granting of credit towards completion of an ECU course based on two broad types of experience:
  • Credit Transfer - learning gained through formal education or training with a recognised post-secondary institution, training provider or accredited professional body;

  • Recognition of Prior Learning - learning gained outside the formal education and traning system through work, life and other practical experience.
Please note that you cannot apply for advanced standing in a course where your course status is Completed or Discontinued.

Please also be advised:
RPL cannot be granted for any units required for accreditation in an Accounting major/course. RPL cannot be granted for units in the Master of Professional Accounting/Graduate Certificate/Diploma of Professional Accounting courses. Any student who is granted RPL in an non Accounting major, who later changes into Accounting, may have their RPL revoked due to accreditation requirements.

RPL cannot be granted for anyone completing the OSH major within a Bachelor’s degree, Master of Occupational Health and Safety, Graduate Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety, Graduate Certificate of Occupational Health and Safety or the Master of Occupational Hygiene and Toxicology, unless the study has been completed at an equivalent level at a university.

Supporting Documentation

Applications for Advanced Standing must be supported by documentation to substantiate the basis upon which the application is being made. Applications based on Recognition of Prior Learning should include supporting documentation as follows

  • The following information is required before any RPL application can be assessed:
    1. The unit for which you are applying to have as Recognised Prior Learning (RPL).
    2. Cover Letter with a brief summary as the basis of your request.
    3. Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages)
    4. RPL Statement: this document should address the Learning Outcomes of the unit. These outcomes are listed in the full unit outline available from the online handbook via ECU’s homepage at http://handbook.ecu.edu.au/
A paragraph is required for each Learning Outcome demonstrating how your experience meets the learning outcome, i.e. describing the activity is not sufficient; it needs to be related specifically to the learning outcome and how you have demonstrated it. For example, if you have been a member of a working party the Assessor of your application needs to know the role that you undertook to achieve the goal.

  • For Credit Transfer this will include copies of documents confirming completion of qualifications and/or individual units of study. Course and unit outlines should accompany this application where the studies were completed at another institution for which no established advanced standing precedence exists.

Submitting your Application

  • Commencing students need to submit their application prior to enrolment in their first teaching period.

  • Continuing students need to submit their application no later than the first week of the teaching period for which they are applying. This will allow sufficient time for the application to be approved and processed before the census date.
